What’s involved in PlayWorks?

Once you purchase PlayWorks, you get instant access to:

Audio sessions: Each week you will learn new skills to use with your child by listening to a 20-30 minute podcast of Dr. Amy Wickstrom. You will also learn how to have structured 30-minute playtimes with your child using some of the basic skills employed by play therapists in clinical settings.

Listening guides: Each week you will print a listening guide to accompany the audio session. These guides help you stay focused on the topics being addressed in each audio session and also provide you with written materials to refer to after you have completed PlayWorks.

Playtime video clips: Each week you will view a short video clip (less than 5 minutes each) of Dr. Wickstrom having a playtime with a child. These clips demonstrate the skills taught in each audio session. Different children are used in the video clips to allow you to see how the playtimes may differ according to the age and gender of a child.

Homework: Each week you have short tasks to help you learn how to set up the playtimes and implement the skills being taught in the audio sessions. It should take no more than a few minutes to complete each week.

Family Activities: Because many parents have more than one child and would like to include other family members in what they are learning in PlayWorks, family activities are provided each week to foster additional creative play and family fun.

Journal prompts: Each week you will respond to “journal prompts” that will allow you to consider how the skills taught in PlayWorks apply to your unique life circumstances.

Skill Builders: Skill Builders are monthly teleconference calls that are recorded live and then archived for PlayWorks participants to listen to at their convenience. In these calls, Dr. Wickstrom discusses different topics related to the special playtimes and the skills taught in the program, and she also answers any questions the PlayWorks listeners may have.

Playtime Demonstration: This video demonstration allows PlayWorks participants to watch Dr. Wickstrom have a special playtime with a little boy. The purpose of this video is provide you with a better idea of how to implement the playtime guidelines and skills taught in the program.
